01 He Said Chair

Designer: Nitzan Cohen for Mattiazzi

A bold chair with confident armrests, the He Said Chair is perfect for your den or man cave, but it’s also comfortable at your dining table. To introduce a saucy dynamic to your room, pair He Said with the She Said Chair. Substantial and stackable, He Said is available in natural ash.

‍The Italian design firm Mattiazzi is known for its “healthy obsession” with woodworking and craftsmanship. Designer Nitzan Cohen is known for always starting with questions. In this case, should the chair he was designing be outspoken or a little more timid? He decided to design both—He Said and She Said. The He Said armrests assert themselves, while the She Said armrests curve gently downward. The top half of the chair is a tribute to Mattiazzi’s sophisticated technology: The backrest, armrests, and legs display a smooth geometry usually seen in plastic chairs. What a nice surprise to see it in solid wood!

02 She Said Chair

Designer: Nitzan Cohen for Mattiazzi

With a name inspired by a café conversation between a man and woman, the She Said Chair is a softer version of its counterpart, the He Said Chair. The stackable She Said Chair has graceful, solid wood carpentry that sits beautifully in a dining room, guest room, or home office.

Mattiazzi He Said Chair

As a child growing up on a kibbutz in Israel, Nitzan Cohen said his favorite birthday gift was LEGO set—not just the regular, but the technical set. “It’s how I spent all my time in the winter,” he remembers. That was his first clue that design might be a good career choice for him. After graduating from the design academy in Eindhoven, Holland, he spent many years as a designer and project leader at Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design in Munich. In 2007, he established his own multi-disciplinary studio, where he and his team work on a variety of projects, ranging from household items to exhibit spaces, for clients including BMW-Group, Diesel, Mattiazzi, and Bree.Cohen says he loves working on furniture, especially chairs, because “they relate most to the body; there is a constant relationship to people, and there really are no boundaries when designing it: you can do things with a chair that you could never do with any other objects. In terms of scale, character, and features, a chair is often the most ‘outspoken’ piece in the room.”When Mattiazzi first approached him about designing a new café chair, he began the same way he does anything he’s working on: with lots of questions. “You have to ask yourself, what will the character of this chair be, will it be ‘loud’ or more timid? You have to find its DNA. And, of course, one must always consider technology: What can we do with the technology we have available to us?” The result perhaps surprised even him: two versions of the same chair: He Said/She Said. "I thought about the classic café scenario: girl meets boy, boy meets girl, sitting on two chairs at a small round table; he says something, she says something…and I named it with that in mind."Cohen clearly enjoys his work and feels that no matter what the question, he and his studio will find the answer. "I would never say it is the best or only answer, but it is our answer, and that makes me really proud."

05 Magis Paso Doble Chair

Designed by Stefano Giovannoni for Magis

‍Stackable and seductive

‍The lithe, elegant motion of a toreador and his cape—the signature movement upon which the traditional Spanish paso doble dance is based—inspired Stefano Giovannoni’s seductive Paso Doble seating family. The Milan-based designer developed the group around the concept of material suspended between rigid structures, much like the sling suspension found on the Eames Aluminum Group chairs.

Giovannoni’s design employs sturdy, roll-formed aluminum rails and flexible polymer mesh to create the lightweight and stackable Paso Doble Chair, available in many beautiful material options for the seat and backrest and several frame colors, and with or without arms. As part of the Paso Doble group, this chair joins lounge chairs, as well as an ottoman and a stool, for a comprehensive indoor-outdoor line created by a designer known for his keen eye for structure, form, simplicity, and, of course, playfulness.
